The 93XRT Big Holiday Concert last Friday was an amazing concert, but the highlight, for me, was photographing The Flaming Lips. Early in the day Marty Lennartz lined up an interview with lead singer Wayne Coyne. I knew I was in for a treat when the interview began by both Marty and Wayne dressing up in Yeti costumes which the Flaming Lips brought along for their show. The interview lasted roughly 35 minutes and the two talked about everything from the bands origins and acclaim in Oklahoma City to the making of their 12th and latest studio album Embryonic. Wayne also hinted to what the fans would be in store for later during their set, including dancers dressed in Yeti costumes.
I was able to photograph the entire set from the stage while wearing a Flaming Lips appointed orange jumpsuit. The show was completely crazy and was definitely more of a performance than a concert. They had no shortage of props including; confetti, balloons, costumes, inflatables, crazy lights, and lots and lots of smoke. I photographed everything using a Canon 50D and used a Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L lens.
